Still In The Saddle

Well Well Well. We've neglected our posting duties, we know. But it's been a rather busy and hectic past couple of weeks (months!??). The collegiate season ended on kind of a weak note. I still managed to finish 4th in Omnium but I definitely wasn't as dedicated to training on a strict regiment as I was the first half of the season, and I only did two races in the space of about 2 months until going home where I did two dinky local races which were my first pro/1/2 races. The two races I did while still out at school made up the Cal Poly SLO race weekend, which counted as the conference championships.
The crit went horribly, as expected, and was the first and only race I didn't finish this season. The road race went much better, and I got into the winning break of about 7 riders. All my luck ran out though once I had to ride the entire last lap on a flat tire. I still managed to ward off the pack though. Then, the small crits at home were really hard because they favor the guys with a lot of jump, which is to say, NOT ME. I almost got one of the primes on a short break but got swooped up just before reachhing the line. That was about as close as I got to taking part of any of the glory.
And that pretty much catches us up to present. I'm out in Lake Oswego staying with Chris and his support crew (i.e. parents) at our luxery training facility (i.e. his home) complete with warm wood fires, prepared meals, hot showers, feather soft beds, and all the bottled beer and gatorade you could ask for. So farthe weather hasn't been so cooperative, but the rides we have done have been absolutely gorgeous. On Saturday we drove up to preview (i.e. do some 'recon') of the last stage which climbs over 7000 feet and ends on a mountain top finish. It was cold, wet, and snowy but very green and full of breathtaking views of massive mount hood, covered in a pristine layer of white snow. Then yesterday we headed down to Silverton with Mark Blackwelder and his friend Jess to race in the 1/2 curcuit race. It was mighty hard. ONly half the guys finished, and luckily Chris and I were among them, though we both dropped from the main field at some point in the last lap. I think we were a little too over confident and a lot undernourished. But we also were feeling our legs from the previous day's workout.
For now it's time to relax before the race starts on Wednesday, prepare our gear, drop some weight (which will be hard with Mrs. Dubois's cooking!) and do some light training. We'll try to keep you updated.
